South and Central America and the Caribbean have long been regions economically close to the United States. Since the 1980s, China has been trying to increase its economic and even political influence, to the point of overtaking the United States as its main economic partner. For politics, the majority of states recognize China in place of Taiwan, with many diplomatic recognition changes.
